Term Project Presentation

My presentation topic was an analysis on eBay and was presented on May 8, 2008. My presentation covered on things such as what is eBay, some recent changes on eBay, the eBay strike, the advantages and disadvantages of eBay, the positive and negative aspects of eBay on society, and the future of the this company. Feel free to leave any types of comment as I know that I mess up a lot and left off a lot of information and didn't do such a good analysis at all.

Review of "The New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework"

The paper was done by Linda Weiser Friedman and Hershey H. Friedman. The paper was informative on the topic of new media technologies. The paper was easy to understand and to read as it didn't have too many complex vocabulary that most scholarly research paper usually have. This would be a good paper to introduce someone to understanding what new media is, the history of it, how it is different from old media, the characteristics of it, and where it is being used at now. It would definitely be a good paper to handout next time you have this course again to the students so they have a better understanding of what it is since the start of the semester. A change that you can do is be more detailed on some of the sites on the Table III since there are some of them that have details and others have lots of space like for example, "1996 VOIP ( add Voice Over Internet Protocol)," " 2005 Youtube (add that it is a video hosting/sharing site)," etc.

Classmates' Presentation

Muhanad - I've heard of the name before but never knew what it was until now, so thanks for introducing this site to me. It seems to be a very useful site for bookmarking and maybe I might starting using it since my favorites are starting to pile up.

Nichel - My relatives and friends have use Flickr before and I never knew it has so many more cool features that you can play around with and how you can organize all the photos and things. Going to use the site to post pics of events and sent them out.

Anthony - One of the sites that I go on often when I'm bored and watch clips of people doing all kinds of things or to watch clips of celebrities that I like. Although many of us know about youtube, its great to refresh our mind about how useful youtube really is.

Johnny - Heard about it but never used it. Great to introduce the major VOIP companies and which ones are the best to use in case I ever have to use it. Maybe I'll give it a try but that if my friends are willing first.

Melissa - The GNU project is a great and open source is cool that it lets people change and modify them and can be share with others with similar interests.

Sarah - Yep, definitely watching TV on the web these days are more common. Even me, I watch most of the TV shows online or on the computer while on TV I watch like 1 hour a week. Definitely very convenient for me since I can watch it whenever I feel like unlike the set time on TV.

Tiesha - Interesting that music artists are coming out with different media for their album unlike the traditional CD. Also those Cd's with cool graphics/usage purpose are very interesting. Haven't seen most of them, I like the CD/record one and some of the others.

Derek - Never heard of Photosynth before but from the presentation, I can't wait till it's out for the public to buy/use. The graphics are very cool and the concept is great.

Anastasia - Second Life seems very cool and many things can be done with in. These virtual worlds seem to be very nice and maybe someday I might use it when it seems less complicated.

Sutharshan - Seems to be a very useful site. Now I can search on how some things work, watch videos and make myself look like an expert to my friends and family or maybe not.

Damon - Bittorrent is something I knew about a long while ago and I have use it before. I never knew it was legal in Sweden and now I know why some of the torrent sites have closed down and why some are still up.

Vincent - Wikipedia is always great to use when you need some quick information. Something new I learn is the sandbox which seems to be lots of fun trying out codes.

Sergey - Google Maps and Mapquest are great for knowing how to get to somewhere but I had generally think that they are mostly more useful for driving and it was great to know that it has been upgrading itself and maybe next time if I get a ride, and they don't know where the place is, I can show them these.

My TechTalk Roundtable - eBay

My TechTalk Roundtable presentation was on eBay. EBay is the world's largest online marketplace where you can practically sell and buy anything. It has over 275 million registered users worldwide. It was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar. In the presentation, I talked about some history of eBay, what they hope to accomplished, some facts about eBay, and some companies that eBay have acquired over the years since it was founded that help contribute to its growth.

Review of "How Sticky is Facebook?" Article

The New York Times article was very useful and informative to me on how users on Facebook had problems trying to delete their accounts permanently from the site. I didn't know this was happening at all since I'm not in touch with my Facebook account and don't usually delete accounts on websites in general. It is surprising and not surprising at the same time since people would think that if the website confirmed with them that their account has been deleted, it would be permanently but it is not. This would definitely make me double check my account on Facebook and other sites if I ever decide to delete my accounts permanently from their websites. Seriously, if users want their accounts to be deleted permanently, sites like Facebook should do it right away instead of dragging it for weeks or months since it feels like it's abusing the users' privacy.

An update on the Facebook issue:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/18/business/18facebook.html?_r=1&scp=10&sq=facebook+february&st=nyt&oref=slogin

After the article came out, Facebook has decided to create a form for users who want to delete their accounts permanently from the site. This has made the process a lot more simple and faster. But the form still has problems of its own. Users are annoyed that Facebook doesn't create an one step deletion for accounts instead of using the form and other procedures.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Amy Chen. I'm currently taking CIS 4670 as my fellow classmates from class and the professor would know. The things that I enjoy doing are hanging out with my friends, going shopping, going online, reading fanfics, watching Asian tv dramas, watching reality shows and among other things. Most of the time when I go online, I'll just surf the web for news, clothing, celebrities, etc. so I haven't really try much of the new media that is being offer out there in the world. So, it's great that this class was offer so that I can learn more about them and perhaps even get to use them. One thing that I got to learn already was this website, I've been a little behind in blogging since Xanga which was a few years ago. So thanks for introducing me to this site professor!
